The Auckland Moon Festival History

The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s four major traditional celebrations, originated from ancient moon worship and was shaped during the Tang and Song dynasties into a cherished festival of reunion. Today, it symbolizes unity, harvest, harmony, and good fortune, celebrated widely across East and Southeast Asia.
Since 2019, the Balmoral Chinese Business Association has led the creation of the Moon Festival at Balmoral Town Centre, with strong backing from Auckland Council, the Albert-Eden Local Board, the Dominion Road Business Association, and the China Cultural Centre (Auckland).
Now in its sixth year, the Moon Festival has become one of Auckland’s most iconic cultural events — an immersive celebration of light, performance, food, and community spirit. Attracting tens of thousands annually, it is a vibrant showcase of Chinese heritage and a powerful bridge between cultures.
