The Auckland Moon Festival History
The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s four major traditional celebrations, originated from ancient moon worship and was shaped during the Tang and Song dynasties into a cherished festival of reunion. Today, it symbolizes unity, harvest, harmony, and good fortune, celebrated widely across East and Southeast Asia, often featuring various cultural performances that highlight its rich heritage.
Since 2019, the Balmoral Chinese Business Association has led the creation of the Moon Festival at Balmoral Town Centre, with strong backing from Auckland Council, the Albert-Eden Local Board, the Dominion Road Business Association, and the China Cultural Centre (Auckland).
Now in its sixth year, the Moon Festival has become one of Auckland’s most iconic cultural events—an immersive celebration of light, performance, food, and community spirit. Attracting tens of thousands annually, it serves as a vibrant showcase of Chinese heritage and a powerful bridge between cultures through its diverse cultural performances.

- Potters Park (Main Stage) features an opening ceremony with a large lantern show celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. Enjoy family games, explore moon landmarks, and soak in the atmosphere with music on the lawn.
- War Memorial Museum showcases cultural performances through various cultural booths, a food plaza, a DJ booth, and a Hanfu experience hall, enriching the festival's vibrant spirit.
- The Food Plaza offers global food stalls and on street restaurants, along with a large-scale amusement ride zone, a DJ music stage, and a dining & rest area for everyone to enjoy delicious treats.
- Don’t miss the On Street Lantern Show, featuring mythology elements like the Moon Palace mega installation and classic moon legends such as the Jade Rabbit and Houyi.
- Explore culinary culture with a reunion banquet scene and a regional mooncake showcase, which highlight traditional delicacies associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival.
- Participate in the ritual of “Bai Yue Niang” moon worship and experience the “Red Thread of Fate” matchmaking activity for a unique festival touch.
- In the realm of poetry, enjoy a presentation of A Moonlit Night on the Spring River and stroll through the Tang–Song poetry light corridor that celebrates cultural performances.
- For science enthusiasts, there’s an inflatable space tech display focusing on lunar and Mars exploration, blending modernity with tradition.
- Finally, visit the interactive zones, including a street-end mini stage, an artistic selfie wall, and a “Moon Worship” live showcase that truly embody the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
