What is a Sky Lantern?

A Sky Lantern, also known as a Kongming Lantern, is one of China’s most iconic traditional cultural symbols. Named after the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang (Kongming), these lanterns have been used for centuries to carry messages of hope, peace, gratitude, and good fortune.

Today, sky lanterns are widely associated with festivals and celebrations. As they rise into the night sky, they represent people’s wishes for happiness, health, prosperity, and reunion with loved ones. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, they symbolize the shared hopes and dreams of families and communities gathered under the full moon.

At the Auckland Moon Festival, the Sky Lantern experience celebrates this timeless tradition while sharing the beauty of Chinese culture with visitors from around the world.

Booking Information

Advance registration is required.
Participation is available by paid booking only.
Spaces are limited and bookings are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Each booking includes one LED Sky Lantern and a guided launch experience.
Participants must arrive at the check-in area at least 15 minutes before their scheduled session.
Late arrivals may forfeit their booking if the session has already begun.

Important Information

Suitable for all ages (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult).
Lanterns remain tethered throughout the experience and are collected by the organisers after the session.
The activity is weather dependent and may be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled if conditions are unsafe.

Ceremony Details

Collection Time: 7:30 PM - 9:15 PM

Please arrive early to complete check-in and prepare for the ceremony. Late arrivals may not be able to participate once the ceremony begins.

The ceremony schedule may be adjusted due to weather or safety considerations.

Safety & Rules

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, please follow these guidelines during the Sky Lantern event.

This experience uses LED Sky Lanterns. No open flames or fire are involved.
Each lantern is securely attached to a safety line and will remain tethered throughout the experience.
Please do not remove, cut, or tamper with the safety line or any part of the lantern.
Follow all instructions provided by event staff before and during the lantern release.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Please remain within the designated event area at all times.
Be mindful of other participants and keep a safe distance during the launch.
At the end of the experience, event staff will guide participants to gently lower the lanterns. All lanterns will be collected and reused by the organizers.
In the event of strong winds, heavy rain, or other unsafe weather conditions, the activity may be delayed, modified, or cancelled.
By participating, you agree to follow all event safety instructions to help create a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible experience.
